My Life as a Language Champion

I am Eleanor, and I am keen to help learners build real-world confidence, master practical skills, and experience those rewarding 'lightbulb' moments in French, German, and Spanish.

My Journey: From Industry to the Classroom

My passion for languages began early. I studied French and German for GCSE, and German at A Level. This really kicked-started my love of languages.

At 18, I spent a year working as an au pair in Germany, followed later by a year as a university language assistant—experiences that cemented my belief that languages are best learned through real human connection.

After graduating with a degree in German and Linguistics from the University of Kent, I worked in the corporate sector, including roles in Customer Service and Accounts Receivable at SC Johnson. Highlights of my commercial career included living and working in Hamburg for six months, analysing business models, and collaborating across international teams.

While I valued my corporate experience, I realized I wanted to make a direct, meaningful difference in people's lives. That drive led me into education, where I have now been teaching for 23 years.

Always in the Learner's Shoes

I started my teaching career focused on French and German, but I wanted to expand what I could offer my students. Over the years, I took evening classes to complete my French A-Level and then to master Spanish.

Continuing my own language education as an adult was a game-changer. It means I never forget what it feels like to be on the other side of the desk—balancing busy life commitments, taking on a new challenge, and building the courage to speak up in a new language.

I have also trained to be an examiner for AQA and Edexcel, learning how to mark accurately, to pass on my expertise to my students.

I founded A to B Languages to blend my 23 years of educational experience, my corporate insight, and my personal understanding of the adult learner's journey into tailored tuition for French, German, and Spanish.

My Teaching Philosophy

For me, teaching is all about watching students make connections and gain genuine confidence. There is nothing quite like seeing that 'lightbulb moment' when a tricky concept suddenly clicks, or when a student realizes they can express themselves naturally without second-guessing every word! Communication is far more important than perfection, so I encourage students to take risks and just go for it!
